The “Peaky Blinders” production team denounced DeSantis’s messaging in a tweet on Wednesday.

We do not support nor endorse the video’s narrative and strongly disapprove of the use of the content in this manner,” the statement reads.

Yeah, putting out this statement pretty much is their only recourse since we’re living under laws that a) allow the wealthy to throw a super PAC sock puppet over their hands and demand we act like that sock puppet is a totally independent and separate thing b) think that the only cognizable damages that can be done to a work of art all have strictly monetary values (I honestly don’t know if I would want to change that second one, but it does almost feel like it should be a crime for campaigns to abuse Born in the USA, Rockin in the Free World, etc., because that shit is gonna give me a stroke someday).

Can I just point out the irony of this ad comparing DeSantis to Thomas Shelby and Patrick Bateman? Both murderers and psychopaths. Villains. And yet the DeSantis campaign thinks these characters, criminal and without empathy or morals, are perfect to compare their candidate to. What the actual fuck.

They’re trying to create an association between DeSantis and ‘badasses’ in the minds of very simple people. Trouble is it’ll work exactly as intended.

It’s not the campaign, though. It was a PAC that’s not technically affiliated with the candidate.

It’s bullshit, but they probably don’t have any recourse as the PAC doesn’t obtain any pecuniary gain from the unlicensed use.
