We have a local storefront that’s been closed for years but people (maybe the owner or with permission from since it’s so consistent?) set up multiple chess tables in front of it most days and it’s always wholesome to pass people playing on an otherwise rather depressing city street.
That’s what I love about chess. The barrier for entry is so low that anyone can play it pretty much anywhere.
You’ll find it in wealthy areas, poor areas, schools, prisons. Kids play it, their parents play it, their grandparents play it, etc.

I’m so horrible at OTB. It feels super weird trying to play it when I’m just used to the top down simple view online. I need to make it to the weekly casual chess night over here to get more practice.
I’ve been meaning to do the same, but time keeps getting away from me.
I want to get past the adjustment period because I feel like I’m playing half-blind.
This is very true, last time I played chess IRL I was struggling with perspective
