The only time I’ve had an ad on YouTube with premium(on their site) is when I went in to invisible mode.

In my opinion it’s absolutely stupid that invisible mode has the capability of detecting that you have an account because it skips the age verification blocker on content-sensitive videos, but it gives ads to people with premium. It’s obviously able to see that you have a YouTube account so therefore it should be able to just do the next step of saying okay does this account have premium. The only thing people are asking for was it to not log the videos they’re watching but they had to make it some Next Generation NASA level secret hidden profile shit that doesn’t actually do anything.

Also it really bugs me that they’ve added ads for YouTube and beds on discord. If I have my YouTube account linked to my Discord account I should not receive ads on the in bed. It should be able to see my YouTube account via electrons cookie system and be able to link it to an account that has premium.

If I’m paying monthly for a service without ads and I see a single (1) advertisement, I should at least get a month of free subscription because the other party is in breach of contract.

I have premium too once I saw an ad and complained and it turned out to be a bug. I even had engineers reach out with questions when they were fixing the issue.

Maybe that has happened here? They have announced any changes.

Thanks, I’m still grandfathered in at the beta price, but I mainly use it for discovering music to add to my Plex collection. The free YouTube is a bonus for me.

I know it’s temporary, I’ll probably cancel when Im asked to pay full price

I didn’t realize that they still had grandfather’s subscriptions, I was the same where I got it at a lower price, but they decided that they weren’t going to honor that price 2 years ago and raised it anyway. I’ve told myself I’m dropping the sub if it goes up again because honestly it’s current price is a little outrageous. But I watch over a thousand hours of YouTube a year so therefore it’s worth it to me.

I get ads on premium sometimes. I think it’s a fluke but def unacceptable

That’s among the reasons why even with premium an ad blocker is required.

It’s a bug with the android app.

I’ve seen it maybe 3 times in 8ish years on my phone. Never once in the TV app.

My wife uses a TV to watch YouTube, My kid uses a phone, My other kid uses a tablet.

Saying just use ad block isn’t feasible for everyone.

+1 for Vinegar. My only real complaint is that I use Firefox as a daily driver, and Vinegar only works with Safari. Even though Firefox is using the Safari engine under the hood on iOS, (because Apple doesn’t allow third party browser engines like Firefox’s Gecko, and forces everyone to use WebKit instead,) it doesn’t support Safari extensions.

I’m fine with switching to Safari to watch YouTube… But since Firefox is my default browser, YouTube links automatically open in Firefox. There isn’t a way to specify that I want everything except YouTube to open in my default browser.

I feel you! Firefox Focus is my daily driver, but occasionally its adblocking doesn’t work on YouTube so I have to manually open it in Safari :c

SmartTube for TV and ReVanced/uYouPlus for Andriod/IOS devices. SmartTube can be tricky to set up depending on the TV, but the mobile apps are relatively simple to get working.

There is no ReVanced or uYouPlus for iOS. You have to sideload that shit, cuz YouTube is too far up Apple’s ass for them to allow something like that on the App Store.

Ironically, they allow Vinegar. But only because it’s a Safari extension (and Apple likes when people use Safari more than they like the money from YouTube.)

You have to sideload that shit

That’s a price you pay when you buy apple. Thankfully it is still an option, just takes a bit more time and effort than on android.

And then you’re stuck constantly reminding every family member which app to use on which device when they come to you because they’re getting ads or something isn’t working right.

For a single power use that’s fine, for a family with kids, it’s nearly impossible without going crazy and killing them.

Do creator even get any real amount of money from the money collected through premium?

Buying premium seems like the dumbest shit imaginable to me.

They do, and based on reported stats it gets them more per viewer. No idea if anybody’s audited those stats though

Not sure about currently but at least a year or two ago creators could see the split of premium views & income vs free views and income and premium views always paid out more

They still can. Whether premium or ad supported views pays more depends on the channel and the value of the adverts that are streamed on it. For channels / topics that advertisers are keen to appear on the ad supported views pay more, for more niche interests the premium views pay more.

YouTube ads cost about $0.026 (two and a half cents) per 30 seconds of viewing. This is called cpv.

It’s not fair that ss a viewer I’m not able to bid on my own to show myself an empty ad slot. I’m looking at the price of premium and it definitely seems like more revenue for YouTube than I’d give them from ads.

This is why you get anti-anti-adblock userscripts in tampermonkey inside of your browser and/or the same inside of adguard for windows. Along with an adblocking DNS

Give them an inch and they’ll take 1000 miles. No more money for google, ever.

For everyone on Android, you can just patch the youtube app using ReVanced, which will remove ads, add sponsorblock, allow you to hide shorts and the “People also watched” sections. It can be pretty tricky to patch if you don’t know what you’re doing so feel free to tell me if you run into any issues.

If you don’t care about the algorithm and your feed, you can get the third-party client NewPipe, it’s FOSS but sometimes crashes while reading some videos It does not seem to crash anymore, so good thing!

    Pick one!

Strange, I’ve had a video that crashed newpipe every time but now it seems to play fine. Maybe because it was a “Coming soon” video? Anyways it seems like it works fine now, I also had a bug where leaving the app would crash the app instead of doing background play but I also can’t get it to occur again. I’ll edit my original comment.

I use gray Jay instead, it has become really good the last wave of updates. Wife is on revanced, I’ll change her over if gray jay adds shorts.

There is still a few paper cut issues with it, but over all I prefer gray jay over the official YouTube app.
