Being somewhat overweight has been an insecurity for a long time, especially comparing myself to how much I used to weigh. Had a big moment recently where I realized that I love my body so much more now than I did then and that even if I could go back to being the same weight, which was underweight, I wouldn’t want to. This is one of the most reprehensible comments I’ve read on this platform. I don’t think it matters at all if you’re from a specific marginalized community who is uniquely facing violence under the Trump administration. That doesn’t mean that you get free reign to call for violence against a minority group of people who already face institutional political violence in the US and who also are living in a country that has been actively engaging in the current genocide of their people in their homeland since 2023. You are also calling for acts of violence against an entire community of people for the political choices a few of them made. This is absolutely disgusting behavior. There’s no justification for this.

I think there’s limitations to that. I also think ideally we should cut Google out our work chain anyways, and depending on data from there makes that functionally impossible. Medical ableism is so infuriating. I’m glad you were able to get diagnosed eventually. For me the word annoying is one of those words associated with like ableist trauma.

I don’t even really like the term hyperactive. I was diagnosed at 6. I was told I was hyperactive, that I couldn’t pay attention. But nothing about why I stimmed, nothing about why my emotional state was unstable and I had trouble properly managing my emotions. Nothing about executive dysfunction, time blindness, hyperfixation, over and under stimulation, or the ways ADHD impacted my ability to socialize. Everyone wants to chalk ADHD up to one thing. But it isn’t. My peers at school wouldnt bully me because of being hyperactive but rather because of my failure to understand the nuances of social rituals no one explained to me. They would bully me because I stimmed especially when I did so verbally. I didn’t even know those things were related to my ADHD. I genuinely just believed there was something fundamentally wrong about me that I could never fix. Once I stopped taking Ritalin in grade six because my mom decided I didn’t need it anymore, I started to just receive constant ableist abuse from everyone in my life. I was always made to feel that it was my fault I was this way, my personal fault that I couldn’t do group projects or get homework or projects done. I’d score poorly on everything I did in school despite being smart and capable of learning well on my own. This was always made out to be a personal failing of my own, and not a direct consequence of my untreated ADHD combined with a system wholly unsympathetic to my experience.

ADHD is so misunderstood by neurotypical people. It’s wild talking to women who haven’t been diagnosed and describe in vivid detail all the forms of ableist abuse they’ve suffered their entire lives. Incredible being able to recognize the commonalities in our stories. Society is incredibly punishing for neurodivergent people. It is only around other neurodivergent people that I really feel able to be myself, to this day. I have helped several women get diagnosed purely by recommendation after becoming close friends with them. It’s wild how it feels like neurodivergent people subconsciously recognize each other.

There exists a persistent stubborn refusal to allow women to discuss the way that discrimination against us is gendered in society. It’s part of the control politics of patriarchy and neoliberal meritocracy. They will deny deny deny as much and as frequently as possible that women are a separate class from them in society. Instead, they will insist that women deserve or have earned the treatment we receive. Society has to be meritocratic in their view, so if women get prescribed pain medication provably less often, then it’s because something about women means we deserve/require it less than men do. This is the same with wages. The same is true with household labor, with child rearing, with sexual violence, etc. “Women are paid less because they take more time off and are less career oriented, they prefer doing household labor more than men do, they have a motherly instinct that drives them to care for children more than men do, and men are predisposed in some biological way to commit more acts of sexual violence than women are.”

It is a fundamental refusal to acknowledge the existence of gender class. A persistent denial that men and women have fundamentally different experiences in every area of society. It has to be something about the actions of women or something innate about women themselves. It absolutely can not be a product of how women are classed in society. This thinking is poisonous and not restricted to one group, it is pervasive and exists everywhere. Much like with racism, being actively anti racist means engaging with your own internalized racial biases. Being feminist isn’t one single thought or belief. It is a pattern of continual appraisal of the systems of gender hierarchy. Many men who believe themselves to be feminists misunderstand this and think simply saying they believe men and women ought to be treated as equals is enough to qualify them as pro womens liberation. Men and women are distinct social classes, and so ought to be analyzed and treated in the same manner as other social classes (like race, wealth, religion, etc)

So the logical thing for men to do, not believing that men and women are entirely distinct social classes who have entirely separate experiences in society, is to bring up their own experiences. If we say that the way we suffer is gendered and unique, they have to experience the same thing or worse. One of the easiest ways for them to do this is to insist that men and women receive equal barriers within society. “It can’t be gendered violence against women because men are assaulted by other men very often too.” Just deny as much and as often as possible that a difference exists at all.

I also share your frustration with this platform and its stubborn and persistent misogyny. I have spent as much time on here arguing with fascists and misogynists. Lemmy has a large population of male tech workers. They brought a lot of their misogyny with them from other platforms.

Forced detransition is one part of it. The other is just forcing all cis women to adhere very strictly with female gender roles. Wouldn’t want anyone thinking you’re trans, better grow your hair out, wear a full face of make up, wear skirts every day, wear feminine colors, and carry yourself to enforced feminine social standards (can’t be too loud men have such booming voices after all, can’t stand up to men because women are afraid of men right, can’t stand or sit too in too masculine a way women always have their legs together, etc).

Cause if someone thinks you’re trans you’ll get the tar kicked out of you, possibly even thrown in jail. They’ll just accuse you of having a fake drivers license and having had bottom surgery. Gender non-conformity is a legitimate liability in places with biological gender essentialist laws about bathrooms.

I have been sexually assaulted before, too. I’ve never used what happened to me as justification to attack the rights of vulnerable minorities. The studies show overwhelmingly that the majority of women will be sexually abused in one way or another multiple times throughout their lives. And yet not every cis woman feels hate towards trans people. Many cis women support trans women. The majority of my friends are cis women, both queer and not. All of them support my rights. The majority of them have also been assaulted before by men. It’s entirely irrelevant to the discussion, trans women are not men. The only possible justification there is that AMAB people are biologically rapists? Like there’s something innate to the Y chromosome that makes you a rapist? Which is an absolutely wild way to view the world and the problem of sexual violence against women. Totally ignorant of why men get away with sexual assault so often. It’s not genetics. It’s entirely our society and culture that allows that to happen.
