Hey everyone,

I am exploring switching over to Linux but I would like to know why people switch. I have Windows 11 rn.

I dont do much code but will be doing some for school. I work remote and go to school remote. My career is not TOO technical.

What benefits caused you to switch over and what surprised you when you made the switch?

Thank you all in advanced.

    This, so so so much.
When I first started using W10 I had like 2Mbps down. There were times I would boot my computer and be unable to load any websites at all, I’d open the task manager and see Windows using 100% of my bandwidth.
I started using it early, when Threshold 2 dropped, I think. Back then there were no controls for updates. It had no Pause Button or the “Active Hours” settings, those came around much later.
There were ways to stop Windows Update from running, but it would always re-enable itself sooner or later, so I eventually went “Fuck it, I’ll try Linux” since I had already played with a Ubuntu Live CD before.

I don’t know what makes windows updates somehow eat so much more bandwidth than a regular download. It would render my Internet completely useless until it was killed or finished. No way to throttle it either.
