iirc it’s there because they can’t race later in the year with the other American races due to weather. If they wait until that late in the year the weather in Canada won’t be super conducive to running a good race.
The continents are kind of arbitrary and where you grew up determines what you’re taught. Afaik in South America they teach America as one continent rather than north and south, for example.

I was taught that America is a continent and then if you want you split it into southern and northern regions.
