In German there’s a story that goes something like this (tldr: God helps those who help themselves):

A very devout man went on a walk and found himself in a swamp, where he started to sink. He couldn’t free himself, so he sent a prayer to God that he may save him.

Some time later a farmer came by, saw the man and tried to help him out of the swamp. But the stuck one, now waist-deep in mud said, “Don’t bother. I trust in God. He’ll save me.” So the farmer left.

The man sunk further and prayed again that God may save him.

When he was chest-deep, a policeman came along and saw the man. He started gathering branches to throw to the man, who, again, declined. “I’ve prayed twice that God may save me. I trust in him to lead me out of this.” So the policeman left.

Still there was no sign of rescue, and the man prayed again.

When the man had almost drowned, a firefighter came by and found him. He had a rope with him and could’ve saved the man within seconds, but he refused again. “I’m sure this is just a test of my faith, but I will not apostatize. Leave, so God can work a miracle and save me.” So the firefighter left.

When the man had finally drowned, he came to Heaven. He asked God, “I have always been a devout Christian. Why did you not answer my prayers and leave me to drown in the swamp?”

God replied, “Are you mad? I sent three people for you!”
