Donald Trump disavowed the set of conservative plans after it became a popular target for Democrats, but his running mate, JD Vance, wrote a foreword for a forthcoming book by its principal architect.

Even as Donald J. Trump is trying toĀ distance himselfĀ from the Heritage Foundation-led Project 2025, his running mateā€™s contribution to a new book by the projectā€™s principal architect is complicating his efforts.

ā€œDawnā€™s Early Light,ā€ a forthcoming book by the Heritage Foundationā€™s president,Ā Kevin D. Roberts, calling for a ā€œsecond American Revolution,ā€ features a foreword by Senator JD Vance, the Ohio Republican whom Mr. Trump tapped as his running mate in July.

ā€¦

But Mr. Vanceā€™s endorsement of the book became more politically fraught after Mr. Trump publicly disavowed Project 2025, a set of sweeping policy proposals for a hoped-for Republican presidency that the think tank began preparing more than two years ago under Mr. Robertsā€™s direction. The project, which has been billed by Heritage as an attack on the ā€œdeep stateā€ and proposes disbanding multiple federal agencies, excluding abortion from health care and ending an array of climate change programs, has become a popular target for Democrats.

His book has some gold in it

ā€œIā€™ll never forget the time I convinced myself that I was gay. I was eight or nine, maybe younger, and I stumbled upon a broadcast by some fire-and-brimstone preacher. The man spoke about the evils of homosexuals, how they had infiltrated our society, and how they were all destined for hell absent some serious repenting. At the time, the only thing I knew about gay men was that they preferred men to women. This described me perfectly: I disliked girls, and my best friend in the world was my buddy Bill. Oh no, Iā€™m going to hell.ā€

When he brought up the issue with his grandmother ā€” known to Vance as ā€œMamawā€ ā€” she replied bluntly: ā€œDonā€™t be a fucking idiot, how would you know that youā€™re gay?ā€

When Vance explained his reasoning, she laughed.

ā€œJD, do you want to suck dicks?ā€ she said, according to the book.

The young Vance, apparently ā€œflabbergasted,ā€ said: ā€œOf course not!ā€

ā€œThen youā€™re not gay. And even if you did want to suck dicks, that would be okay,ā€ she replied. ā€œGod would still love you.ā€
