And while I am no expert of the workings of a modern combustion engine, I do indeed have an understanding of how a combustion engine works. I also know what reaction takes place and I know the average fuel consumption of an average European car.

English is not my primary language. I believe it was explosion motor what you have written at first.
And while I am no expert of the workings of a modern combustion engine, I do indeed have an understanding of how a combustion engine works.
