I’m not afraid to ask, but haven’t yet received a convincing answer either.

i don’t hate webp. i think png is better, but i think webp is fine

but i really don’t want google to have more control over how i browse the internet.[1] let’s maybe use an image format that isn’t owned by them, perhaps

        1. especially given how they’ve recently shown that they will abuse their monopoly ↩︎

Idk they’re less compatible with editing software? I don’t think photoshop supports it by default Sucks when you just want to make a quick meme, and google serves you a webp version of a file that has png in the filename, lol

lol. I don’t use Photoshop but just reading this I’m convinced it’s just Adobe being a little kid and jealous of Google for developing a good compressed format, otherwise adding support for it would be so easy for them that they could just add it in a point release and not even bat an eye (since webp is free and open and all that stuff)

Try downloading a png from a site that converts to webp for their CDN services. It’s my only real complaint, but it’s damn annoying going into the Firefox config just to download a simple image. I don’t mind them displaying it as webp, but let me download the source image

I don’t hate webp. I think JPEG-XL is awesome and I hate that Google prefers to work on webp over jxl.

I thought for a second that this meme would have been uploaded in .webp for the lulz, but alas after downloading the image to my phone and then going into the properties, it’s jpg.

webp and webm are genuinely pretty good, they work really well for web pages/for transmitting over the network.
jxl is better but support for it is crap

Fr I’m sick of having to open preview and export to use images I download in other places. Bout to just start screenshotting instead of downloading.

I like the idea of webp. But ugh it’s annoying that I can’t easily share it. My main way to communicate with some folks I’m close with is Messenger and it doesn’t support webp. So to send people funny pictures, I have to screenshot and crop.

theres a firefox extention to save webp as png or jpg, when you right click a webp, you can then select “save webp as” and then pick jpg/png

Meta only had 12 years to implement this. They simply could not be bothered. Even with free libraries and documentation of how to implement this web standard.

Yes 5 years ago from a basic user standpoint where he was still pretty rare and difficult to work with. Even the GMU image manipulation program required an add-on plugin to open them. Today it opens exports and manipulate some just fine as does krita blender and most other applications that I try to use it with. It’s not the formats fault. It’s the greedy corporate monocultures that can’t be bothered to compete and implement new features and formats to cater to their customers. Because you’re not there? You are their products.

I literally created my own python program to mass convert webp images into png images because they’re so annoying to edit or work with and I didn’t want to screenshot

Everyone’s issues with WebP are actually issues with anything around WebP

I used to hate WebP but then installed qt5 image formats something or other and i can now view WebP same as any other standad image type.

What’s the purpose of converting webp files to png? Isn’t it potentially making the filesize bigger? Is it for compatibility for legacy apps?

Personally, imma use this script for the legacy compatibility.

My use case is making maps and character tokens for Virtual Table Top games, and it feels like no one supports webp format. One of the standard tools I pull up when doing my thing is a webp to png converter.

Fancy? As in are these the logos for Webp and JPEG XL? Then yes, these are logos.

JPEG XL is a new image format that has better compression and more features like HDR over JPEG.
