A good article from The Guardian discussing the trouble we face in Australia with ever increasing vehicle sizes.

We really are in many ways. Most of our politicians are in the pocket of fossil fuel lobbies, while Murdoch and his ilk control the prevailing narrative in the media. There’s a car brain epidemic here for sure.

I would actually totally look into a Ute if they sold them in America. Are they like a Subaru Brat?

I live in New Orleans and barely drive, and even then I have a PHEV and solar so I basically use gas in my daily life. But my parents live in the suburbs and I like gardening so when I really need a vehicle, I need like half a truck. Putting the seats down in a hatchback mostly works but an electric Subaru Brat would be ideal for my actual needs.

This is what we had before Aussie car manufacturing died and people jumped on the yank tank arms race.

I was going to say the ute is dead. I didn’t know yank tanks are still being referred to as utes, at least according to Wikipedia. Crazy to think that utes and station wagons have been replaced by giant trucks and SUVs.

Sounds like the perfect solution for you is a trailer. You get a vehicle that’s best at being a car for the large majority of your uses, and then for the rare occasions when you need to haul stuff you just hitch the trailer to the car. If it’s a rare enough situation then you can even just rent a trailer, or even rent a full size pickup truck for those rare days

Visibility is limited in a sedan now because there are so many larger cars. Time to go buy a huge car so I can see more than one car ahead in traffic.
