The Forbidding Unlawful Representation of Roleplaying in Education, or FURRIES, Act, filed by Austin-area Republican State Rep. Stan Gerdes, would “prohibit any non-human behavior by a student, including presenting himself or herself, on days other than exempt days, as anything other than a human being.”

The law would allow for exempt days, such as Halloween and other school dress-up days.

The law defines “non-human” behavior as “any type of behavior or accessory displayed by a student in a school district other than behaviors or accessories typically displayed by a member of the homo sapiens species,” with provided examples being:

Using a litter box for the passing of stool, urine or other human byproducts

A personal or outward display, except during a school play or by a school mascot, through surgical or superficial means of features that are non-human such as using tails, leashes, collars or other accessories designed for pets

Using fur, other than naturally occurring human hair or a wig made to look like human hair

Artificial, animal-like ears

Other physiological features that have not historically been assigned to the human race through a means of natural biological development

Students who bark, meow, hiss or make other animal noises that are not human speech

Licking oneself or others for the purpose of grooming or maintenance.

Whew, so you’d still be able to lick people for other reasons.

Acting like animals is something humans do, just saying…

@superkret @sundrei The law is of course unenforceable, even on its own terms. In context of centuries of legal doctrine, it’s far too vague to ever be fairly enforceable against anyone.

The reason is not nefarious, I believe. There are people who really believe this myth, and I’m strongly inclined to believe this bill’s sponsor does. You wouldn’t include the detail about litter boxes, for example, unless you really believed that was happening.

      He’s just extremely ignorant.

Ah yes, doing the important work. A lot less options with halloween though. Is Spiderman or Batman still ok, or too much animal reference? And what about cops, they all look like pigs. Are they going to arrest their colleagues every morning when they arrive at work?

So this is a law that bans something that has basically never happened? And obviously it’s going to be abused and kids are going to get arrested for wearing headphones with cat ears or any other garment that could be construed as animal dress up?

Fear and propaganda. The life blood of their party is in pushing the great fear of the big scary thing as a target to push through their rules to make the people safe…

It’s nazis just before the camps go up and the Jews get put in train cars.

They are obsessed with these things. I wonder why? Repressed desires, I say.

The problem is, this can affect kids following (do I even need to specify it) harmless trends like plushy overalls or hairbands with ears.

So, they are also obsessed with dominating kids and putting their fingers where they don’t belong.

Reminds me of this 43 year old song:

Laß doch die Kleinen in Ruh
Laß doch die Kleinen in Ruh
    du kuinierst mich so
    du alte Sau

edit: Full lyrics here. Definition of kuinieren.

Laß doch die Kleinen in Ruh

Laß doch die Kleinen in Ruh

      du kuinierst mich so

      du alte Sau

kuinieren Aus französisch coionner. Hier in der Bedeutung von quälen, plagen, misshandeln.

      So basically,

“Leave the little kids alone. Leave the little kids alone. You torment me so much, you old pig.”
