I’m glad you enjoy them! Close ups like this on Shorties are always so intense.

If you haven’t checked out the “feed the owls link” yet, it’s for a Lemmy.World charity contest that can get us a donation from the admin team, which I’d of course direct to the owls! There are also a lot of other good causes there as well, or you can start your own.

I appreciate it! As I’ve always said, I never want to seem like I want you guys to feel like I’m compelling you to do anything, though it is a secondary goal for you to feel motivated to help out your local rescue. I’ve tried to keep the contest links available but not obtrusive so they’re easy to ignore for those that aren’t interested or already voted. I’m surprised at what I feel is low participation in it, but it’s still got 3 weeks to pick up, and I’ll likely decrease the little notifications if no one is doing them anymore. But as it’s not any of you having to actually give anything directly except a quick comment, I feel it’s ok for me to subtly point it out, but again, I still don’t want to annoy anyone in the process.

I feel a little bad too looking at some of the other causes, like today when I looked at who was currently in second place, and they want to donate money to keep LGBT people safe during these times. So, while I of course want to win, there are other causes out there that can also benefit a small bit from the contest as well. Even if they don’t win, it can still let you know about other opportunities and causes.

I also have been debating if I am one of the winners if I send it to where I’m volunteering or somewhere else. They already get my time and money and it deals with more than just owls, and the prize is in Euros , so while they could still send it here to the US, there are all-owl places like Suffolk Owl Sanctuary in Europe and I would understand if some didn’t want to see Euros going to the US right now too.

So If anyone is on the fence about participating, I do put my own time and money into things, and I don’t care which rescue it goes to, I just want to do right by you guys. My intent is to not be annoying or needy, just to promote and support what this community exists for (in my view anyway).

The way I look at it is, you spend a lot of time curating and posting pretty amazing content to the community which is directly on-point and a perfect example of the excellentness of Lemmy, so. You should get it. Because afaik that’s the goal of the fun competition. Not to “out-cause” anyone.

That said, if not, or even if so, everyone visiting here should note the rescue groups mentioned in the posts here, and if one strikes your fancy for being local or particularly awesome, to search them up and click that donate button!

And whichever group you decide to go with in the event of a win, it’s all good by me. And if not, well that’s what we have now and that’s already pretty awesome.

I appreciate that! I just worry about letting you guys down somehow. I try to treat my role here mostly seriously, and it makes me have a sense of responsibility to you all for giving me an audience.

Most of the causes probably deserve full funding. It’s a shame many of the gaps our societies leave for people and the planet to fall through. It always blows my mind that I haven’t found any place yet that funds wildlife rehabbing. It feels a majority of people anywhere enjoy that animals exist, and much of their modern day harm comes as a result of humans, but we won’t as a collective take responsibility for it and leave it to charity. 😔
