This is what infuriates me about these reports and talking heads. Who cares how many jobs were added if wages remain low, or better paying roles are replaced by lower wages and no benefits, or workers are losing job security, or their stifled wages afford less?
When they say things like this they’re not talking to regular people. They’re reporting sales numbers to investors and CEOs.
Don’t forget those “temporarily embarrassed millionaires” voting against their own interests.

Who cares? The employers who have to provide benefits for people who work >X hours, that’s who.
Wage growth surpassed inflation every month this year.
Not saying you’re wrong or I disagree with your sentiment.
For who?
Three letter titled people.
Across all wages combined? What if you just look at people who make <100k?
I’m pretty wrecked after my 1 full time job. I would rather turn to crime before I get 2 more jobs.
Most of these jobs are not full time. So people do work more than 40h a week, but not necessarily more than 8h a day. For example working on weekends or off days of the “main” job.
But it’s fucked regardless.
When I was working multiple jobs none of them were over 40 hours but I’d regularly be working 12+ per day 7 days a week.
Not to mention the commute times between them.
Fucking hell I’m happy I’m working only 1 now that pays almost $30 per hour, the only issue is if my rent keeps going up at the same rate per year and my wages keep going at the same rate I’ll be priced out of my shitty apartment in 5 years. 10 years max.
It’s also the constant switching and commuting and different routines. 40 h between two (or more) jobs I found more stressful than 40 h in one job. It was like work never ended when I had two part-time jobs and one from home.
The lack of consistence and hours is what I hated about part time jobs. I hated those shifts that would eat up my entire day, now at least I work every morning and done by 4.

25 or 6 to 4!
Join a Union. I’m in a plumbers union and after I finished my apprenticeship and got my journeyman’s license I’m pulling $46 an hour.
People underestimate the trades
I get the sense that is changing… People are worried that many jobs will soon be automated and see that the trades will be safe from that for quite some time.
Most people don’t have the manual dexterity or mechanical intuition to get into trades. Millwrighting, welding, plumbing and electrician-ing all require a person who is clever enough to understand and repair equipment that they have only just seen. Most people have a hard time applying a screen protector for a phone they have owned for months.
Domestic manufacturing is where Canada/USA should be aiming to create jobs. All skill levels are required and automated facilities still need humans. The positions are a lot more varied now, with most tasks being those that would require expensive vision systems or minor problem solving. Domestic manufacturing might help with some of the bull shit global supply chain issues as well.

American Reality*
I have even better news if you live in the USA. The unemployment rate increased so the rich people can finally hire for lower wage and increase their profit margins…I mean the economy can finally get a handle on inflation
It’s honestly hard to believe the job reports. Things sure don’t feel better
Knowing a certain number of jobs are filled tell us nothing about how people are actually doing.
Employment could be at 100% and it wouldn’t matter when the majority are making nothing.
Yup. “Hooray, Bob Cratchit has a job!”
This is funny, cause in Germany we say the same shit about the reforms of the SPD. Yes, the SPD is our last big workers-party. It’s a shame.
They were. Nowadays it feels more like CDU-light. Seems to be more profitable. Heck, even our chancelor is involved in a financial scandal.
It’s a bit more complicated. It’s a tactital decision, which was made back in the 19th century under Bebel. If you start a research about Kurt Eisner you will find the first debates about it. It’s also one of the reasons why they supported ww1 and betrayed the revolution. And of course they’re our last big workers-party, which makes it so tragical.
Poor moron: “The stock market is doing great!” Me: “The stock market has nothing to do with YOU! Stop simping for billionaires. It’s embarrassing to watch.”
Until the rampant greed gets under control globally this will never change. It’s always been there but shit is turned up to 11 the past few decades.
How does it work with resting hours in the US? You also have a minimum for off-work time, no matter what work, right? For example in Austria it’s 8 hours every day + 48 hours per week for most jobs.
Yeah no we don’t do that here. That’s considered socialism and stifling the right to labor all you want in America.
We’ve also been in the process of abandoning the 40 hour work week that our ancestors fought and died for with things like frequent mandatory overtime and unpaid lunch.
I actually had no idea some countries got guaranteed resting hours. I’ve worked 12 days in a row once and I was even in a union then.
Freedom, “unregulated” and anarchy are basically the same things, just from different perspectives. Honing selfishness ensures that you can easily sell shitty government with “freedom”.
You are free to carry guns. Of course that also means you are less protected from other assholes who are also free to carry guns.
You are free to work as much as you like! Of course you also can be systemically forced to work more than you want, then.
I think there actually are requirements (I might be wrong) but it’s just very often ignored.
I’ve at least had restrictions about how many days in a row I could work at every job I’ve had. That goes out the window though with multiple jobs
Lmao nope. In my state you cannot be scheduled more than 6 days in a row(for most jobs. Some jobs can go a full 7 out of 7) and employers are required to give one 24 hour rest period… but that’s per job, not cumulative. If you have two jobs, the only thing stopping you from being scheduled 6 days a week at both and working at least one job every single day is if your schedules overlap, in which case you have to choose which job you like more because you’ll probably be fired soon from the one you don’t go to.
No such thing in the US. Each job may work you up to 40 hours per week. There is no limit if you have multiple jobs, because the limit does not apply between jobs. Most poor people in the US work multiple part time jobs.
There aren’t any limits on working more than 40 hours either. Many jobs you’d be entitled to overtime, but there are millions of people who don’t get overtime despite working it.
Yes but that’s actually illegal, so most jobs will not do it. Those who do are committing huge amounts of wage theft and tax fraud
There’s no upper limit. Jobs can work you 80 hours a week if you let them.
This is literally not a thing, afaik.
Where I live, your employer cannot make you work than 9 hours a day or 40 hours a week without having to pay you overtime pay (at least 40 % more than ordinary hourly pay). If it happens regularly, the employer will get the Labour Inspection Authority on their ass.
Voluntary work is not allowed to exceed 13 hours a day, or an average of 48 hours a week within an eight week period.
LOL nope
Haha no, I’ve routinely gone weeks without a day off, post covid shutdowns it was several months of 7 days a week 10+ hour days “to help the business stay alive”. Currently my record for longest workday is 67 hours straight since we had a security incident I needed to stay and work on to limit damage, I’m not all upset about that one though, I’ll gladly do it again because fuck cyber criminals
“Who needs a UBI! We’ll just require that employers provide a living wage and benefits to all their full-time employees.”
Why does your entire staff get scheduled for 38 hours a week?
“Have you seen this new Shiny
CreditDebt Card…?”U
