Idea for Improving Monthly Image Challenge Rewards
Right now, the Monthly Image Challenge prize is simply that the top-voted entry gets to choose the next month’s theme. While that’s fun for some, it can feel underwhelming as the only reward — especially since the “past winners” list is buried inside the challenge thread where many participants may never see it.
A stronger approach would be to showcase the winning entry more prominently:
- Feature it outside the challenge box — in a banner, on the generator’s intro page, or as part of a dedicated “Hall of Fame” section.
- Pin it separately so it remains visible even after the month’s challenge ends.
- Create a permanent winners gallery where all past winning images and creators are displayed together.
This would make the recognition more visible, give the winner a lasting spotlight, and motivate more people to participate. Instead of the prize feeling like “homework” (picking a theme), it would feel like a proper showcase of achievement.

and im open to anything if ppl want BUT keep in mind upvotes downvotes to win are flawed in many ways. i was inspired to make this by the contest in another group and very often people would upvote who they are positively connected to (to support them) instead of their fav image. So the most popularly liked person often had most upvotes and thus ‘won’ most contests even tho it had little to do with the pic. Also images posted early often got more votes. Also here people submitting thru the comments plugin cant be voted on at all and many perchance users have no lemmy account. At the core of this contest is the intent to happily share art on a topic and see what others make on it. So Ive often considered removing the ‘winning’ part and changing it to ‘everyone wins’. But I also think it would be unfair for me or any single person to choose every topic. So anyway idk. Definitely is open to positive change tho. as far as suggestions, too many pics for banner, maybe separately pinned post could be fun?
