That Reddit will not shut down. It will take the hit and go on and probably make at least some money. Only, it will be a much different place, more like Facebook or Instagram, in that it will be full of ads and less specific information.
It will cease to be a different, often niche space and become just another, more generalized social for a more generalized public.
In short: we, aka the people who migrated, simply are not their intended target anymore.
On the subject, I found @gonzo0815 's post very interesting and more detailed than my summary😅 (link https://kbin.social/m/RedditMigration/t/25185/A-few-thoughts-about-the-blackout-and-the-future-development)
Let’s not poison ourself, thinking on “how to make them pay”. Let’s move on, and enjoy the new internet spaces we are building!
Of course Reddit won’t shut down. Neither Tumblr nor Yahoo did. It never was the point.
Let’s just hope the users who came here for the time the storm pass will find the content they want, or the patience for time their community grows.
Let’s enjoy Lemmy for what it is. An opportunity for a restart of what we loved so much on Reddit, with the comforting feeling that no one will ever be able to corrupt it.
Wow, the fediverse at work: I posted on kbin and you’re replying from lemmy! This is awesome!
Oh?! That’s so cool. I have to admit I didn’t expect that.
You can’t even tell. I figured I was talking to people from Kbin, cause that’s where I am. Turns out most of you are on lemmy. It’s seamless a lot of the time.
@joneskind@lemmy.world now wait until you see that i’m replying here from a self hosted calckey instance! ^^
Strongly agree with both yours and OP’s sentiments. There’s little use dwelling on Reddit now, and we have something really special starting here on Lemmy / Kbin / the Fediverse.
It’s been great to see various communities grow and adapt to the changes since this all took off.
