I moved to a new apartment about a month ago and needed some new furniture. A relative of mine offered me a couch that they were getting rid of for free. They helped me move it in since it is too heavy for me to move on my own. It turns out they were getting rid of the couch because it was infested with bedbugs. Within a few hours I had bites on me and after checking the couch found multiple visible bedbugs. They won’t take the couch back and they won’t help me move it out of my apartment because they think it would be a shame to get rid of a perfectly good couch. My building charges a fee to dispose of furniture but to even do that I would have to get it to the basement and I don’t have anyone to help me move it. So far the bugs haven’t spread but most of my apartment is carpeted so it’s very likely they will.
Edit: 1/16/23 The couch is being moved tomorrow. I was afraid to ask most of my friends for help because I don’t have many and I don’t want to risk spreading bedbugs to them, but one of my friends used to be a professional cleaner and I asked her for help to keep them from spreading. She has been helping me clean and bag up the couch and tomorrow her brother is bringing a truck over and it is going to the dump. I’m also, at least temporarily if not permanently, cutting off contact with my relative. This was a throw away account as the relatives kid follows my regular account, so I won’t be replying to anymore comments.
