“Left” and “right” are IMO kind of terrible at properly categorizing the true spectrum of political beliefs that can be held.
I recently tried taking the 8 values test and I rather liked that one. It tries to place people on four different axes; economic, diplomatic, civil, and societal. I felt like it did a good job encapsulating my own views when I took it.

The fact that tankies tend to side with Russia against Ukraine makes no sense to me. Like, modern Russia isn’t communist and doesn’t even pretend to be, and even if they just liked it because it used to call itself that, Ukraine also used to be part of the Soviet Union too.

I’m having trouble trying to understand the definition of ‘tankie’. In all honestly I’d appreciate some clarification on this, as I’ve still not seen a consistent defining factor of what a tankie is, it’s either anything left of SocDems all the way to gleefully unapologetic warcrime enjoyers from what I’ve seen. Some people who I know who self identify as tankies seem like some of the best educated and nuanced people I know. I seriously don’t know what the deal is?!?
It is a derogatory term, so it’s bound to get overused a bit, but it generally refers to “leftists” who like the USSR and simp for existing authoritarian states with “communist” parties, like the PRC, Cuba, Vietnam, NK, and even Russia despite it having nothing to do with any kind of socialism anymore. Some of them are indeed war crime enjoyers, while others try to dress it in denial and propaganda.
As a counter example, socdems, democratic socialists, anarchists are not tankies, it’s not just anyone on the left spectrum.
