I‘m glad to have you too, the Reddit behaviour was making me nauseous and I was worried I couldn‘t find a good community to replace it. Then I discovered this instance and explored Lemmy a bit further, made some more accounts elsewhere and jumped around and it’s NICE! So excited to be here.

If you find juggling multiple accounts to be a bit of a hassle, my recent chapter about subscriptions might be of interest. In short though: you can use one account to access all of Lemmy, but there’s a few specific steps you need to follow to subscribe to other communities on external servers.

Thank you, that is indeed helpful, didn‘t know about the search either. Still all so hard to deal with cause as soon as I tried to upvote that post I had to login again and that is pretty much how I ended up with what is by now 5 accounts.

Good info, I’m also brand new here and looking for an instance in my region. I signed up for beehaw.org, but I’ll just ignore it if they actually give me one. I have a signup in for lemmy.one, they’re okay, yeah? Weird how they both made me fill in some questions and wait for a reply.

I‘ve got one account on lemmy.ml and connect to beehaw through that but one of the first posts I saw there was a discussion on defederating from it cause the mods are tankies. It reminds me of Reddit already haha.

But yeah good advice, seems like choosing main instance is an important part of what experience one has in the fediverse.

I think the instance for people being tankies is the lemmygrad one. My instance, sh.itjust.works, has defederated from this as the only one.

I directly linked you to my instance. You’d have to follow the instructions there to search for and get to my community, NCL Meta, to actually upvote from your main account. It becomes less of a hassle the more you do it.

      Seventy-three men sailed up

      From the San Francisco Bay

Rolled off of their ship, and here’s what they had to say

“We’re callin’ everyone to ride along to another shore”

T’was a bad day when our old ship sank to Davy Jones’ locker.

But it brought us together here, so welcome aboard. This ship should hopefully never sank.

What Odin said to Thor. Asgard is not a place, never was, never will be. It is the people.

I’d known about the fediverse for a while but the final push I needed to move was the reddit API stuff. Now apparently something’s happened to the old vessel as well, so I’m doubly glad to be here.

If I can ask, what exactly happened? Did reddit finally take it down or maybe infiltrate it with its own mods, as I’ve heard they might be doing?

To be fair, even if reddit does nothing to r/piracy, we’re still better off moving ship. Our reddit community is already dangling on the edge with serious threat of being banned anyway.

It’s worth building this community here just to mitigate the risk

Oh, I fully agree. I’m here not just for this community but for the whole fediverse shtick too. And if this move gets more pirates who came here only for this community into fediverse/privacy stuff in general, even better! I’m really hoping that will happen, but can’t be too optimistic I guess :)

And you’re right about the risk to the original sub. When you think about it, it’s kind of amazing that /r/piracy has survived so long, since reddit isn’t known to be very conservative in using the banhammer.

Hi, first post here. I noticed the newyuzupiracy subreddit was recently banned, does that have a community here?

We really need a way to more easily access comms from other instances, or to sort comms by instance. I’d like to subscribe to most dbzer0 comms but finding them in the All list is a pain.

Thanks, but really I mean finding the comms in other instances from within my own instance, such that I can subscribe to them remotely. Finding the comms is easy, you can just go to the other instance (eg open up lemmy.dbzer0.com) but in order to subscribe from another instance you need to go into Communities, click All, then search for them one by one. The Communities list needs a way of filtering All by instance.

Also, it would be nice if all of this could be done from within Jerboa. Jerboa only seems to search comms you’ve already subscribed to. Right now subbing to comms is best done in a web browser.

Yeah you can find lists of instances all over, but to subscribe to them you have to go to the instance you’re logged into, go into communities, click all and then cross reference the list and search for them one by one.

I just want to be able to browse other instances’ comms from within my own instance, so I can subscribe to them directly. A simple option of filtering the all list by instance.

You don’t have to search one by one, you can type the community name in the search box. Still clunkier than I’d like, but not too bad.

You can type the community names, one by one. However you have to know the name of the comment to do that.

What you can’t do is type the instance name into the search or otherwise filter by instance, so that you can discover and add multiple comms from that instance in one go.
