Train tickets on most routes in the Netherlands could rise by more than 10 percent in 2025, the Dutch national railway NS said on Tuesday. The company made this statement in its annual report, which showed a substantial loss of 191 million euros last year, its best yearly result since before the coronavirus pandemic. The NS already wanted to raise fares by 8.67 percent in 2024, but that was prevented when the Cabinet provided the railway with one-time additional funding of 120 million euros. That payment was made based on demands from parliamentarians.
I am annoyed how this concept is so normalised that no one wonders anymore.
Should public rail be self-sufficient or is it a public good?
And how much was the loss of highways this year, compared to rail?
Never mind that highways encourage modes of transport that kill more people, both directly and indirectly.
Widening of A1 highway costs 400 million euros.
From Rijkswaterstaat. The “sustainable” part is literally just not unnecessarily using streetlights. Totally ridiculous.
I’m not entirely sure but NS is not a public company but a private one with the dutch state as majority stockholder. Used to be public though…
