Ok I have a confession to make. I often don’t put tomato sauce on things that are expected required by Aussies to have tomato sauce. It’s a shameful thing, and I don’t want to talk about that.
But, sometimes I must have tomato sauce. The bottle is almost empty, and after upgrading my BBQ sauce and Mayo, surely there is a great bang for the buck tomato sauce.
Choice rated Community Co A Squeeze of Tomato Sauce, available from IGA, as number 1 in 2019 from a list of over 20 tomato sauces/ketchups.
Anyone tried this and can give me a recommendation and reasons on why I should try something else over this?
Ima have to apologise in advance for being a questioning beotch that expects a reference to a scientific study for every statement…after quoting Choice 🤣
A good pie or sausage roll doesn’t need dead horse but if I had to pick my favourite it would be Beerenberg for the win. The chilli one is good too. I have not tried the one you’ve mentioned.
Fair enough. You can’t recommend against something you’ve never tried.
You recommend Beerenberg over others you’ve tried. What is the second best tomato sauce you’ve had, and what’s the difference between that and Beerenberg’s?
Beerenbergs was ranked 22nd in the Choice survey. Everyone’s taste is different. Why do I want to choose Beerenberg’s over the 21 ranked above them?
Beerenberg is a lot thicker than the average tomato sauce, with a more varied texture in the mouth. It also has some additional spices and ingredients like apple and onion which give it a more complex flavour. There is also a “hot” variant with a small amount of chilli that is even better again. Finally, they are one of a few manufacturers that use fermented vinegar instead of acetic acid and/or citric acid which does change the flavour slightly. Another manufacturer to use this traditional method is Ozesauce, who I also recommend. However, Ozesauce is closer in flavour and texture to any other tomato sauce you’ve had, whereas Beerenberg really stands out as being quite unique (hence why it has so many fans).
Having said all that, at the moment I have a bottle of Rosella at home since it was on a good sale last time I was buying tomato sauce. It’s fine. Honestly I think there is not actually much difference between any of the thinner tomato sauces, they don’t vary anywhere near as much as other sauces like sweet chilli or BBQ which can be awful if you get the wrong one.
I just like the taste of beerenberg. It’s a bit thicker than all the others. Reminds me of homemade tomato sauce. All the others that are in squeezy bottles are fine to use, they kind of taste the same to me, but if I’m gonna have the odd occasional sauce on pastry I’m gonna choose premium.
I don’t know why it’s rated #22. Maybe because it’s in a glass bottle or it’s more expensive than the others. My second choice is whatever is the cheapest because like I said they all taste the same to me.
My advice is to try Community co but if you can, give beerenberg a try too.
I only know about beerenberg because when I was in Adelaide that’s what was served to me in a Cafe so when I saw it in the supermarket I knew it was good. Slowly I’ve been trying all their products and there’s not one that has let me down.
Thanks,. appreciate your comments.
No worries. I’m interested in your thoughts about Community co. I’ll certainly give it a go.
Beerenberg here too. It tastes like a home made one without the chunky bits.
I buy whichever brand is available in reduced salt & sugar when I need a bottle. The current one is a Heinz. Nothing exciting about it, I’ll mix other things in myself if I want a zing.
I am 100% loyal to Rosella brand. The old glass bottle was a staple in the house as a kid. Looking back, that’s actually saying something as we were a poor family and usually got cheap brands. I guess mum was all about Rosella, also.
These days, I get the plastic squeeze bottle.
The no 1 and no 4 in that list are cheaper and rated higher than Rosella!
That’s why I’m looking for someone who has tried the number 1, and can actually recommend it. The only place I see it mentioned is in the Choice review. Nothing in any forums etc
Follow up post.
I’ve now bought and tried the Community Co from IGA. It’s very red, is reasonably thick. I’m no tomato sauce connoisseur, but it tastes bloody good to me for such a low price. 👍 and will buy again.
Mind you, I use so little sauce, this might last me years…😋
There is a ketchup that doesn’t have any added crap in it that tastes amazing. It’s called Portland. However, you likely can’t get it. :(
