EDIT: Don’t vote on this poll if you don’t interact/lurk in this community somewhat regularly. This survey is for those people.

Hi everyone,

I made a survey to better gauge the demographics of this community. I don’t have any reason to, just doing it out of curiosity.

I’m glad that everyone felt free to talk about it in detail and have some good discussion on my previous post, but it made it hard to count all those comments up. Someone suggested that I do this to get more accurate results.

The poll ends on April 6th at 11pm. I’ll post the results when it’s over. You can also view the live results of the poll on the website.

Might make a future one for sexuality. Data is fun, what can I say.

What are your predictions for this poll?

I imagine that’s because the post can be seen by anyone, not just subscribers.

What really surprises me is how few binary transmen there are here. In my local community it’s roughly an even split.

I noticed the same thing from the original pie chart OP posted. Turns out there is research supporting the hypothesis that there are less people identifying as binary trans male overall.

Still really interested to see what the results of this poll will be, keeping in mind that the numbers may be influenced by non-subscribers and users from across the fediverse.

Edit: whoops, corrected “transmasculine” to “binary trans male” to avoid confusion.

I was under the impression that there were significantly more transmen than women worldwide.

I seem to know more transmasculine people and trans men than transfeminine people and trans women IRL, but online, in my experience, there’s always been way more trans women and transfeminine people than trans men and transmasculine people. AMABs regardless of gender or identity have always had the biggest hold on the Internet in my experience ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Seems like a definitive answer requires more research with higher sample size.

I’ve also noticed a difference in online exposure, and the difference in subscriber counts between FtM and MtF communities on Blåhaj Lemmy also suggest it’s real thing.

But there’s also the possibility that people don’t want to identify with the “trans” label. Since modern models of gender identity require it to be treated as a high-dimensional vector, the spectrum representation probably doesn’t cut it for a larger amount of people than we might be aware of.

I questioned and came to the conclusion that I’m quite happy where I am.

My partner is nonbinary though, so I lurk in these sorts of spaces so I have at least a little bit of community awareness and understanding.

Eh, I just browse ‘all’. Would I chose to be a woman if I had the chance at birth? Likely yes. But I quite like my ding-dong either way 😄

I am however quite jealous of women’s fashion, the big scarfs, big wooly jumpers, and flowy textiles.

Fwiw, the impression I get is that there are a goodly number of cis folks here, with the intent of being supportive and learning more. I know that’s why I’m here. It makes me happy when I see people that have a difficulty in their lives find a path to their own happiness.

I may not like every trans person I’ve ever met, but I love trans people.

Totally agree and my comment was completely in jest ❤️

Honestly it’s refreshing to see support. Especially on the Internet where there is so much hate for us…

So thanks for speaking up and letting us know you exist 🥰

I like to keep aware of trans issues, discourse and general stuff so I can be more supportive of my boyfriend. Also if I see someone struggling with something he conquered, I’d love to be able to pass on anything that can help.

I love him dearly and I kinda see me trying to keep aware of trans stuff in my social media circles similar to him keeping aware of Jewish stuff in his social media circles.

      Also, queer solidarity. ✊️

Voted as cis man, have questioned but still haven’t really felt too out of place how I am. I did feel extremely distressed probably outside of how a normal person would react when I noticed I was getting male pattern baldness however

Does your emphasis of the word “male” imply that you are uncertain and still questioning? Just curious.

Nothing wrong with questioning. Everybody goes through it to some extent. Most people think for a short amount of time and realize they are happy with who they are and how they perceive themselves.

Others take longer to come to the same conclusion or even to realize something else about themselves.

Just wanted to mention that if you’re feeling any guilt or shame for questioning (I did in the beginning) please know that it’s perfectly normal and there are tons of people who are there to support you ❤️

So try and enjoy your journey where ever you end up. It means you are growing and building a better understanding of yourself ❤️

Btw, there’s a deep annual survey at https://www.gendercensus.com . It’s not specifically about this community, and excludes purely cis-binary people, but has interesting data & trends if you’re into this sort of thing.

A minor point but you only have 3 of the 5 nonbinary options. AFAB she/theys and AMAB he/theys aren’t represented in the options.

Yeah I was surprised too but being a cis man doesn’t preclude them from being gay or pan or whatever. I prefer to think of people as default allies until they prove themselves otherwise.

Further, I don’t think it’s a problem for cis het men to be here if it’s from a learning/allyship perspective.

What about adding the poll temporarily to the community resources section?

That way it is not just in everyone’s feed, and it takes a little more efforty to participate. I’m active here, but I found this community through cross instance bleedover.
