I haven’t really messed around with city builders, though I did have a blast playing Zeus and Poseidon.
What are y’all’s favorite city builders?
^ Not in terms of how many mods there are or raw Numbers Of Things in the game but in the actual depth and fun to the decisions you are making in moment to moment gameplay.
I did like anno 1800 but the whole “let’s imagine the colonization of the Caribbean as fun and just pretend slavery wasn’t absolutely integral to the European relationship with the Caribbean” just feels… idk if problematic is the word but it just feels odd. It’s like watching a movie that has the aesthetics and music of a classic slasher horror movie film but it is a comedy film with no violence and the whole time you are watching the movie you keep wondering why the movie was made to precisely echo the aesthetics of a graphic horror movie (the main character wallks around dressed up like Jason Voorhees and always has a machete but he is just a pretty nice guy looking for romance). At the end you are confused and unsettled that the movie never addressed or rationalized being filmed exactly like a horror movie while never straying from being a comedy.
Its like HOM 3 but the campaign focuses on many short games played over a meta campaign where you gain the ability to build new buildings and units based on the “shards” you conquer (each “shard” is its own separate run through of a short HOM3 type game). There are “local lords” that will fight for control of the shard but the real problem is when other gods similar to yourself also try to stake a claim on a shard and you have to battle them.
Eador Genesis is HARD af, but the New Horizons mod has been in development for years and it has grown the game into an extremely tight, challenging experience that you really ought to check out if you like HOM 3. The graphics are also wonderfully old school pixelated and simple like HOM 3’s are.
It is a bit hard to find info on some of the units and mechanics but the underlying game is just so damn tight and the turn based combat is nail biting, so it is worth pushing through that annoyance.
If you end up liking it but find it confusing feel free to reach out with questions, I have played a good bit of it.
Do you have any recommendations for playing as a new player with a friend who is a new player using the co-op mod. I know that isn’t the ideal way to do it, but I don’t mind steep learning curves so much especially when it is for games that are meant to be played for years and years like Rimworld.
For mod specific tips I’d say the hygiene mod sounds silly but adds a lot of QOL like simple heating. If you’ve ever tried to balance the stupid space heaters you’ll know what I mean.
Here’s the google spreadsheet with all multiplayer mod compatibility ratings. A green/4 is great no issues but 3S aren’t bad.
My friend and I basically played it as two different colonies on the same map. We’d just cut the spawning area in half and make our own base on each side. Helping each other out in big raids and going out on trips together.
For rimworld tips I don’t want to info overload you or spoil things you’d naturally come across so here’s some things I think might help with that early game info overload.
Lots of things in the farming menu but you can just grow rice and ignore the rest. Healroot for meds ofc tho
If you get into nutrient paste you don’t need a dude who can cook (which is basically a full time job). There’s even a bigger nutrient paste network in one of the mods (I think one of the vanilla expanded ones).
Struggling with keeping an area too cold or hot? Double wall that area
No pyromaniac colonist
It doesn’t matter too much what stats you start your colonist with but try for like no negatives and not too old. You definitely do want one or two medics at the start of the game tho.
Colonist happiness is what you’ll probably find the most annoying as a new player. Just hover over them to see what’s bothering them and fix it. Drug policy sounds intimidating but it’s really easy and I just reuse the same bs policy I found someone using online. So you might have to grow a few plants for beer and weed.
If you have any more questions please reach out. Hope that helps!
I think we didn’t share colonist because half the fun is building up colonist you care about. It also adds a slightly competitive aspect where it’s fun to make fun of how jank the other persons colony looks. We’d usually find a map with a river that splits it in half and just flip a coin on who gets what half.
For traders we would split the components which was kinda difficult to do before we downloaded a mod that allows colonist to grab x items.
Rimpy is the mod manager we used and I’ll send you the list of mods we used in mp. I’m at work rn and not sure how to post a text file on here but here’s the contents of my .txt mod file that you can paste into rimpy to import.
The ones that say local mod you’ll have to download manually through rimpy because rimpy likes to glitch and call some mods local that aren’t. You can ignore core and biotech though since those are local.
I’ll try to edit this later to highlight some of the more important ones. You should turn off
Factional war and raid extension for your first runs though bc those add random hostile parties to the map that might kill a colonist.
Wow hell yeah thank you so much! I love mods but I really don’t have much fun manually putting modpacks together as I am after a coherent experience that is roughly balanced and fun, so I REALLY appreciate seeing an example of a collected list of mods that someone who plays the game frequently in co-op might use! Thank you. Now I just have to buy the damn game lol

“Eador Genesis New Horizons”

Feels shivers down his spine but gets interested
Hey, this sounds really cool! I’ll give it a check.

Rim World and Going Medieval are my go to city builder / colony sims. Atrocities are rewarded in those two!
Going Medieval looks interesting!
I have still never played Rimworld, I keep meaning to buy it and get around to playing it. I feel like playing it co-op would be a blast.
I’ve exclusively played rimworld using the multiplayer mod and it’s a dream even with 90 other mods on. Can’t recommend enough!

Do you specifically not recommend sharing colonists but instead having a two base kind of setup?
What mods do you think make the choices you make in moment to moment gameplay more fun and interesting?
