I guess it would mostly depend on how well you could hide doing other stuff, like reading a book or drawing something. But if the only thing you could do is pretend to work I can imagine it becoming boring pretty fast.

They definitely seem like they could be helpful. Not for the research itself but for getting some blackmail material for when we need to convince some officials. We do share a similar enough goal so working together should definitely be possible.
