  • Because you remember it better when you actually write it out instead of just using a keyboard. And you can draw diagrams with ease. Most styluses are inaccurate and one dimensional, and buying a phone with actual proper stylus support in both the display and stylus itself is expensive. You could buy a separate technical device just for note taking with proper stylus support and have it upload notes to the cloud so you can access it at all times, but that requires a constant internet connection and mobile data is expensive. And then you have to carry this seperate device with you in the same way you’d carry a much cheaper physical notepad anyways.

  • Texting is expensive and mobile data for Whatsapp messages is much cheaper, even though mobile data prices are still outrageous.

In South Africa 1 SMS costs 50 cents on standard rates, and 25 cents on bundle rates. For one message. There are 100 cents in one Rand obviously. 1GB of data is around 80 Rand. If one WhatsApp text message is 30kb, 1GB of mobile data gets you over 30 000 WhatsApp texts. Meanwhile that same 80 Rand only gets you around 300 SMS’s on bundle rates.

  • What does the word “tankie” mean according to you? Would you consider Nelson Mandela a “tankie” for his support of the Cuban revolution, taking inspiration from Mao while imprisoned on Robben Island, and being thankful towards the Soviet Union for their support in ending apartheid while being the last recipient of the Lenin Peace Prize? Because if so, then I’m sure if I’m welcome here as a socialist South African who will always be grateful for the choices Mandela made…

And before I get accused of brigading, this post appeared on the front page of my all feed. I’ll link a screenshot as proof in the spoiler tag below

  • I’m sorry about that happening. I think a lot of hexbear users just comment on every instance as if they’re on hexbear, which has a very unique culture that will definitely seem extremely weird to outsiders. I remember first joining the site after subreddit bans and getting into some arguments over that.

I have been trying to tell other users (I’m just a normal user myself) to beware when they are on other instances and to tone down the “trolling” and similar antics. I hope the new rules around federation, as well as an upcoming emote scaling fix, can facilitate that.

Wish your instance (and other instances we are federated with) the best of luck on the fediverse.
