but recently there’s been a trend—especially among younger people—where it’s sometimes avoided.

漢字を理解するのに部首からいくのはいいですね、部首と旁についてある一定の意味を覚えたら読めなくても意味を理解するのが簡単になります
小学生レベルで1026個ある漢字をとりあえず覚えれば日常で困らないレベルになると思います
