Hello everyone,
I’ve seen your community created yesterday, welcome to Lemmy!
As I’ve seen a few people asking about mobile apps, here is a list with filters: https://www.lemmyapps.com/
At some point, apps might as your for your “instance”. You can fill that field with “lemmy.ca”, then use your username and password to login. This should work, if not, feel free to comment below.
If you don’t like the default lemmy.ca interface, there is also
- https://photon.lemmy.ca/
- https://old.lemmy.ca/ (similar to old reddit)
All of those interfaces allow you to access the same content as the default interface, it’s all about preference!
There are a few guides available at !newtolemmy@lemmy.ca
If you have any question, feel free!
Nice to see new communities over here. One thing that I do is in addition to reading up on the communities I’m subscribed to I like to go through /all because its nice to see stuff outside my usual channels. Also some of the Star Trek memes are funny despite not seeing the show
I exclusively browse the all feed personally. I’d rather block things I don’t like and be exposed to new things, instead of having to find what I want to see.
Hi, I just joined and I’m wondering how do we reply to comments. Thanks
Hello! Are you on the website or an app? On the website, there is a curved arrow that would open the reply text box:
I was on the website when I commented but I switched to an app and it’s much easier. Thanks for replying.!
You are welcome!
Hi! Sorry to ping an older thread, but (with your help) I just got around to finally downloading an app for Lemmy on my phone. So this is partially a test to see how it works (check check), but also I had a question I felt would be more likely to be answered here than out in the larger Fediverse (did I use that right? lol)
… soo on the lemmy.ca website, I was able to see both the upvotes and downvotes for each post/comment. On the app client I selected (Sync), it just shows the total. (For example: if a comment has 8 upvotes and 2 downvotes, it only shows the “score” of 6) but honestly I found it really interesting to see both numbers. Is there any way I can do that with the app? It doesn’t really change anything functionally, but I dunno, I guess I’m just nosey 😅
Anyway, thanks for this post! It was a big help 😊
Hey @OddQuality@lemmy.ca! I also use Sync and looked around my settings and couldn’t find it, so let me know if you figured it out. If not, you can also ask on the Sync community on Lemmy if you haven’t. Looks like there’s two, with the first being more popular, but you can ask on either or both.
Thank you for this!
And thank you for being so welcoming to this new community! It’s awesome seeing someone letting redditors in and showing them around Lemmy.
We always say that Lemmy is more welcoming, it was time to walk the talk!
Also very interesting to see newcomers use the platform
Hello!
There should be an option somewhere in the settings! I don’t use Sync myself, but I remember people talking about it
I tried downloading an app for it but can’t log in with my account? It keeps asking for an instance. Wtf does that mean? I feel so stupid trying to navigate this damn site.
Hey! Welcome to Lemmy. So, gonna try and explain instances for you and everyone else who reads this:
To use an analogy it’s kinda like different email servers. If you have a Gmail account, you can send emails to other Gmail users, yahoo users, or any other email server.
You’re on lemmy.ca. That means you go there to log in, your account is stored there, everything Lemmy related relies on that server for you.
I’m on sh.itjust.works. I’m on a different server, run by different people with different rules. If, hypothetically, the sh.itjust.works admin goes mad and starts doing crazy things (cough cough spez cough), I can take my account and go sign up somewhere else and still have access to all the same communities.
Lemmy is federated, which means no single person or organisation owns it all. Anyone can run their own instance and hook up to all the other instances.
I hope that helps!
Thank you I think that makes sense!
Your instance is “lemmy.ca”, you can use that to fill that field that then your nickname and password, you should be able to log in.
Let us know how it went.
I got it logged in and set up using the Thunder app. Thank you so much for the help!
Glad to hear!
Thanks again for helping us navigate the transition! Was just curious, what’s the little rainbow thingy mean?
Hello!
That rainbow thing is the Fediverse logo. The fediverse is the network of connected servers, in your case for instance Lemmy.ca is your server.
I see this thread from my server, Reddthat:
If I click on the logo on your comment it gives the comment from your server: https://lemmy.ca/comment/9696531
Both are connected, and allow people to setup their own server compared to Reddit that is a single website.
Ahh okay! So when you see the logo does that mean that people from different instances are contributing but it’s all connected?
Actually you see the logo for everyone, even if they are on your instance, it’s just there by default. You can identify users from another instance (like me, I’m using Reddthat.com) by the “@Reddthat.com” at the end of my name. It works a bit like email addresses.
It is indeed all connected!
Ahh okay cool, thank you. Lots to learn here and I’m loving it 😁
You are welcome 😄

How do I add a photo in a comment? I cannot figure it out. Idk if it matters (I’m thinking no) mom using the Avelon app
Hello again!
I asked on another “sub” about Lemmy apps, and even though I couldn’t get an answer from the Avelon dev, I got one from the Mlem dev, @sjmarf@lemmy.ml
