Any games with animal people in it that you want to talk about? Either as a recommendation, or as a “look at this interesting thing”?

For me, I’ve been playing three games recently:

  • Tunic: An adorable zelda/soulslike hybrid that looks adorable. It also captures a unique sense of retro and nostalgia that I haven’t felt before. Would recommend, and worth going into it blind.
  • Super Lesbian Animal RPG: I know it’s not really aimed at me, but I’ve been enjoying it. It feels very genuine and doesn’t take itself too seriously. So far, anyway.
  • Friends vs Friends: An online arena shooter/deckbuilder game. Pretty fun, although I’m not good at it yet. Not yet sure how P2W it is though.

    Banners of Ruin!

Slay the Spire never really clicked with me but BoR’s combat system feels so solid and natural. I haven’t checked on it in a while but the main downside was that there wasn’t a ton of content available. There’s still a lot of replay value but eventually you always fought the same last boss.

Tunic is amazing and I hope we get more games from that team.

Still need to start SLARPG cause I only hear amazing things about it.

RIght now I’m trying to finish Hi-Fi Rush.

I’ve heard Tunic is good. I’ve been waiting to pick up on sale. What makes it good in your opinion? Does it have good game play, art, story or all those things? I don’t know anything about it other than Gardiner Bryant recommends it.

Tunic is super related to old school Zelda and adventure games like that and honestly has a very charming, nostalgic feel captured.

The great parts of it are the level design, plot, music, presentation, controls and …really everything honestly. Only thing it’s missing is a tiny bit of handholding but you can look things up yourself when you need it. Legitimately a instant classic for me with a whole heck of a lot of charm and mystery around it in a nostalgic way.

Oh and the language you see is not random.

Been playing Chained Echoes lately. It’s very good! If you enjoyed Xenogears, Chrono Trigger or early Final Fantasy this game is for you. Turn-based combat with unique mechanics, huge map to explore, compelling story, banger soundtrack, and plenty challenging. After watching a friend play the prologue alone I immediately knew I needed it.

That sounds great! The upcoming Sea of Stars sounds quite similar (I played through and really enjoyed the demo) and is very heavily Chrono Trigger inspired but in very good ways, hehe.

        Someone else recommended that game to me. I’ve downloaded the demo but haven’t tried it yet. .;

Fuga: Melodies of Steel 1 and 2. CyberConnect2’s passion and commitment to their furry setting of Little Tail Bronx is amazing. That they have released games for it since the Playstation 1 and even though it sadly never sells well they keep at it clearly because they truly just love that world so much.

This time the game is a turn-based RPG with resource management focus about a bunch of kids who are trapped in a giant ancient tank and they have to use it to save their families from an invading army. The tank also has a special cannon that can destroy any enemy, including bosses, by using the life force of a child, which adds a lot of tension to the game. The game is equal parts adorable and tragic, but it leans towards a hopeful tone if you play well enough.

Really looking forward for the next one to conclude the trilogy.

I’m still in the middle of FUGA 2 but CyberConnect2 really knows how to build their world. Having played Tail Concerto and Solatorobo in the past, knowing that they all exist in the same world, just at different times, you can really pick up on things.

      spoiler

Such as Shepherd being named after Malt, where Solatorobo takes place.

While 1 was fairly easy to not have to use the cannon, I’m finding 2 much harder especially with the “auto-load”. But I am SO GLAD they removed the fail chance on the intermissions.

I’d love to see a Tail Concerto remake, but given how poor that Little Tail games seem to sell I doubt it’ll happen.

Yeah I also noticed there was a Hotel Savarin owner, probably an ancestor from the family that adopted Red. You can really see their love for that world in these litle things.

They really improved Fuga 2 as far as QoL goes, the skill rebalance was pretty well done, I liked how weaker skills got more powerful over time, and the auto load really ramped up the tension for players who tried to pretend the Soul Cannon didn’t exist.

I guess anything related to Tail Concerto and Solatorobo would have depend on the fans, on top of poor sales it’s likely that they are tied up to some arrangement with Atlus and Bandai. It’s sad to see that these games never get the reception they deserve but I’m so grateful that they keep at it regardless. Lets hope CyberConnect2 keeps getting anime games so that they can fund future entries.

I played 7 Days to Die for a few hours and it’s basically edgy Minecraft.

I’m here for the Minecraft part, not so much the edgy. I didn’t realize - or maybe i forgot - how much i hate the post-apocalyptic visual style, and there’s a lot of ambient sound effects trying to scare you even though nothing’s happening. It’s by far my strongest feeling about the game, yet it’s not something that i can actually criticize them for because it’s a matter of taste.

But it is a vastly better survival game than Minecraft, the challenges are a lot more concrete and real, there’s a lot of thought put into cause/effect combinations, all while having Minecraft levels of freedom.

The early game is incredibly unforgiving, any random zombie is genuinely hard to take down with fists or starter weapons, starter tools are very bad at modifying the environment, food and water are scarce, and improving any of this is locked behind skill unlocks that i found really steep.

Between the visual style and the harshness of the start, i would have given up immediately if it weren’t for the fact that i always knew exactly what to do next, the progression is super clear. Also i didn’t (would never) buy the game at random, i did my research and i know for a fact that i’m going to enjoy the late game. Basically, if this game wasn’t in a post-apo zombie setting, it would be my favorite game.

Also, Gross! It’s a combination of tower defense and FPS.

I played the demo, which consists of the endless mode; the main problem i have with this game is that the ceiling is low: few turrets, their upgrades are hard-capped, no customization, you can’t build vertically, the maps are too narrow to really make a good winding path, no character upgrades, no weapon upgrades. Which means you start to feel pretty powerless in the late game, when the enemies constantly ramp up but you and your turrets are still the same.

But, the game is really well thought out in that the weapons and turrents match the enemies pretty well. Also the gun design and gunplay is pretty great.

      Fans are OP, use them.

As old as 7 Days to Die is, I keep seeing it mentioned here and there even today, so it must be pretty good. I love the survival genre so will have to add it to my list to try out sometime.

If you love the survival genre, and for the price, it’s a no-brainer.

Also this game has a huge modding and multiplayer scene that i haven’t touched on because i haven’t experienced it yet, i just booted a vanilla solo game

    • SLARPG is so good. Very nice story with likeable main characters; doesn’t take itself too seriously or go too far in the other direction and make a farce of itself.

    • I’ve been playing Pokemon Black 2 for the first time as I watch Chuggaaconroy’s LP, and I can see why a lot of people have said B2W2 is the best game in the series. I wouldn’t go that far, the Gen 5 games are a bit cutscene-heavy for my taste, but still really good. And I would certainly say they’re the nicest-looking games of the series; the pixel art and animations are phenomenal, and if Gen 5 had to be the last generation with 2D graphics, they sure went out on a high note.

Recently started Divinity Original Sin 2 because I can play as a lizard boi.

Only a few hours in so far but I’m enjoying it. The narration and voice acting is fantastic, especially with the perk that lets you talk to animals :3

For those who haven’t tried it I’d say it’s a cross between Elder Scrolls and Diablo, with turn-based tactical combat. You don’t need to have played the first one - I haven’t and still got the gist of the story pretty quickly (it’s mostly a new story set after the previous events from what I can gather).

Lately I’ve been playing a lot of Tetris Effect: Connected and I’m kind of surprise how many hours I logged into the game so far given that I didn’t really expect that much from it going in. Currently working on trying to a least A rank all the modes and and defeat the last boss.

Another game I’ve been playing is Wildfrost and it’s similar to Slay the Spire but there are some mechanical differences that makes it where there’s a lot going on which results in it being a bit more difficult compared to Slay the Spire.

There are some games that are coming out at some point that has piqued my interest:
