God my friends would suck the fun out of smash bros.

Room with 6 people: Hey let’s play smash bros! 1V1 ONLY NO ITEMS FINAL DESTINATION BEST OF 5.

Me: Playing pokemon on my phone for the 40 minutes I’m not allowed to play the game that allows 4 players.

My unpopular opinion is that the pros aren’t actually that good if they have to gut a game to play it. I wanna see the do all the crazy shit they do but with items on and on annoying stages like the moving Pokémon one. Either get good or fuck off. I can’t think of another game where they do this stuff to this extent.

They do this in every game that has a competitive scene. It’s done as a means of eliminating random chance being the factor for a victory or defeat. Does that make it less fun? Depends on who you ask.

If you ask me, yes. But then I don’t play competitively.

            Rocket League

They removed non-standard areas first from competitive queue and then from Standard as well. And then they stopped offering the rocketlabs Gamemode for non-standard Maps.

It took me all of 10 seconds to find the rocket league list of competitive maps, and it’s about 16x the field of “competitive smash”

I play rocket League and i can tell you that they are all the exact same shape and size. They just have different colours and environments around them.

There used to be non standard maps in competitive, some of them were oval, or otherwise differently shaped. See here: https://liquipedia.net/rocketleague/Category:Non-Standard_Maps

If Smash Maps were all the exact same shape with different textures your point would be valid.

I get that you have no experience trying to play this game skillfully and don’t really care about the concept of fair competition but I can promise you, the competitive players would still dunk on you with every mechanic turned on. Because without the gimmicks you actually have to learn the base mechanics to win which Carrie’s to any game mode.

They know more about the game then you so they know how abusable the item system can be and how obstructive stage hazards can get. They’re looking to compete, not just dick around with friends so of course they’d look for the most equal ground to see who’s better.

There’s a time for both tbh. If you want to just fuck around then items and stuff are a lot of fun. But if you’re playing from a competitive mindset many of these mechanics get in the way of the parts of the game they love the most. In fact, I think my experience playing without items made me more effective with them when I played with people that wanted them turned back on.

The important thing is that you play the rule set everyone playing will have fun with. That’s why the customization of rules has always been pretty in depth.

Smash Ultimate’s ruleset manager is a treasure. I have a ruleset for 3 stock no items final destination sweaty mode, one for 3 minute timed match w/ items so everyone can play at the party no matter how often they die, one for stamina no items w/ FS meter so its like a classic fighting game, one where you can only throw homerun bats at each other, one titled BOMBS SUDDEN DEATH, etc. Fucking phenomenal.

"No! Mechanics that make lower tier players closer to high tier players shouldn’t exist!

Growing up playing Smash Brothers with my friends we all had an agreement that the only items we would use were pokeballs at max spawn rate. Two years ago I played Smash for the first time since then with some other people with all items on and it felt weird. I haven’t played since.

Every Saturday I play with friends online. And unless it’s a theme night, it’s free for all. The only stage not in rotation is Palutenas Temple as we’ve found it’s just too big. Otherwise, all items, Smash meters, all stages. Only way to play.
