LW is trying to be Reddit 2.0 with all the excessive moderation and “real” email address requirements. Hell, it might be even worse.
“real” email address requirements
First time I hear about it. So you can’t just register with any email provider?
They don’t allow burner addresses.
What about simplelogin?
I don’t know.
Correct.
Hm, I registered with my own domain… Worked fine
nice to know they’re blacklisting burners instead of whitelisting “known” email domains at least!
https://lemmyverse.net/communities?order=active
9 LW communities in the top 10. 5 out of 10 from 11 to 20.
Lol !onehundredninetysix@lemmy.blahaj.zone is at number 14 and it’s only existed less than two and a half days.
Damn that’s impressive. I guess we fedifolk are already practiced at packing up and moving when the local authority turns to shit
Very well done by the community indeed
I may say this as a LW user, but LBZ feels like home and the whole community was rightfully pretty hurt about the 196 drama. Glad everyone stood together and made it clear what was up, and that Ada’s work in particular is much appreciated
In another month or so when LW updates (the synching issue will actually be delayed even further beyond that they said), will this really be as much of an issue anymore?
If they want to provide hosting services, then let them? We can always move if we don’t like them, and let’s face it that some of those giant communities are fairly toxic and would remain so wherever they go.
Then again perhaps I am speaking of things that I do not know here: out of the top 10 communities listed there, I am not subscribed to any of them.
We need a server that just proxies the main instances but filters out every post containing “Trump” or “Musk”.
I’d subscribe to that one.
Nah, we just need native lemmy filters, us non americans wouldn’t be missing out on much anyway. (better rules too, we need those)
Most news containing them is just clickbait and always shit like “trump says” “trump slams”
If you dont want to see those type of posts, then you can follow communities which dont include them. And block any instances/communities you dont like so they disappear from /all. You can also create your own community with your own rules, or your own instance. Neither of these things is difficult, they just need time and determination.
Some people post US politics on general communities. I have like a 100 communities blocked and I still see them.
It sucks because those communities aren’t all politics so I’d have to block the good content too.
Also the filters should include images of vote-slogans. Which could be tricky with OCR.
It can based on alt text
I like your ideas. Not gonna lie i kind of didn’t take this seriously but i mean, what’s stopping anyone? If i learn how tf lemmy internally works i could add a feature or two that helps us non USians 😎
I’m not sure a filter would actually work that well. For example, it might block out Trump and Musk, but then a new
keyboardkeyword appears, and having to manually re-adjust the filtering all the time quickly becomes tedious.Instead, it should probably be based on instances (for example, block a whole instance), communities (whitelist/blocklist communities), or some kind of more complicated recommendation algorithm, but i don’t know how that would work, or how to make it “unbiased” and fair.

I’m assuming you mean keyword? If so, it shouldn’t be too bad. Just add on to it, and if you see more, add more. The real problem are image posts (ie normal title but image of trump or musk) you’d need to use an AI for that
Instead, it should probably be based on instances (for example, block a whole instance), communities (whitelist/blocklist communities)
Unfortunately some people post US politics on general communities, so even then you’re not safe. I wouldn’t block general comms just because some people ruin the fun for everyone else.
I guess making new instances gives us the chance to block certain topics from the start, setting in new moderators that can maybe be more stringent on keeping the community fun.
Starting a new instance is no easy task, let alone a community alone 😆
Though you’ll always get those “everything is political” mfs (see this post), who just insist on greying every single space with [US] politics. Usually they can be banned easily.
Though if that were to be made, i’d probably switch to it, lol.
yes exactly thank you for this link :)
if you need any help setting up that new instance, let me help you :D i’m located in austria, if that matters.
Do you have experience in sysadmin of Lemmy instances? 😄
i have some experience in sysadmin in general, but not specifically lemmy yet. let me write you a DM.
Sure, thanks!
I don’t know if LW is too big, but there is such a thing a too big. Ideally no single instance should have to use “federation-style” synchronization within itself. Below that size economies of scale might justify growth, above… not so much.
I’m in lemmy world. Is that bad?
It’s okay. It’s usually the concentration that communities rather than users that’s a bit concerning
if it doesn’t feel bad you’re probably fine
Why world it be?

Wdym too big. It’s like a fraction of a fraction of reddit
It’s too big regarding the whole platform. https://lemmy.world/comment/14610021
Also https://fedidb.org/software/lemmy/ 16k users out of 43k are on LW
