I think it’s a complicated topic. As a trans woman there are many benefits to a number of cosmetic surgeries that I can get, such as dysphoria relief and unfortunately less discrimination.
Personally I feel everyone should have the option to have a body they are more in tune with. I have a cis friend that wants to reduce the size of her breasts. She briefly mentioned wanting the surgery for the sake of her back, but regardless of reason I think it is always valid to pursue cosmetic surgeries if desired.
There’s of course the issue of unrealistic beauty standards and the like which impacts us all. For me I dunno how much of my dislike of my face is learned and how much is innate. I’m guessing it’s both. Hormones changing my body made me like it much more so I already have some sense of how much things can improve and how much it improved my life.
Yes, the unrealistic standards gets me too. I’m in my 40s, my boob’s are saggy, my tummy is bulging and I’ve got wrinkles. Perfectly normal for my age, but social standards say this is gross. I notice it a lot with older celebs, they sometimes get work done which looks bad because they know they’ll get ripped apart for showing age. It’s awful
I’m looking into hair removal for my dysphoria, and the number of hoops my insurance wants me to jump through to get just the treatment of my face/neck covered is unconscionable.
I think my biggest problem with cosmetic surery is that availability is mostly dependent on one’s ability to pay for it. The people who need these procedures the most usually can’t afford them.
cosmetic implies unneeded so FFS, well, that’s just me wanting not needing because its cosmetic… priced to be exclusive so it keeps its social status as something for the privileged. any GAS is still surgery and there are records kept. so, want FFS surgery in the USA to treat your g.d.? you should prepare to pay with your life.
but, yeah, full bodily autonomy for everyone. that’s the idea, right? except for the unprivileged. dont get me fuckin started about dentistry

be aware that is insurance company logic. They make that distinction specifically to deny care. Any care that improves health, longevity, or quality of life is healthcare, even those that would be dismissed as “cosmetic.”

I believe everyone should have free, unlimited access to any cosmetic surgery they want.
I don’t have a problem with it in general - your body, your choice! Surgery that’s well done is often undetectable. And also, surgery can be gender-affirming. I do think sometimes people use it to fix perceived flaws and end up unhappy with the results because they either had unrealistic expectations or there’s something deeper going on in their self-image.
I’d always hated my nose and swore I would get a nose job as soon as I could afford it. But I’ve been able to afford it for a while now and never followed through. I guess in the intervening years I stopped hating it so much. I still don’t love it but I just don’t care so much anymore. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I agree I wouldn’t get it done for enhancement either. It’s just not my cup of tea. I’d support a friend doing it but I might raise concerns about any risks, realistic outcome etc
Unfortunately the results tend to look too unnatural for my taste, so I’ll keep my own face unchanged.
I’ll admire cosmetic surgery when done well, but it just makes natural beauty that much more special;)
Cosmetic surgery is literally life-saving for trans people, and even if there might be toxic or poor uses of cosmetic surgery in cis people doesn’t mean we should think all or most cosmetic surgery is toxic or wrong.
I’m not opposed to it in general, but some of it looks extremely tacky.
