  • yeah. think of it like email.

Instead of being username on reddit youre now username@instance. As long as your instance and my instance are set to talk then its like we are on one big server. I can sub to communities out of my instance and post content and others can do the same with communities on my instance

if you see a community on a different instance that you cant find on yours you can even paste the whole link in the community search bar and if you are the first subscriber from your instance you’ll add it to the search bar for your whole instance (as long your instances talk)

It’s pretty dang cool and now that its got momentum I cant wait to see where it goes

  • I think a lot of people from twitter made accounts ( I know I’m guilty) because we all thought twitter was legit about to disappear into an internet sinkhole

but when it didnt I think the quirks of mastadon kept a lot of people from spending the time to find everyone all over again.

My opinion is ,even though its not the best anymore, some flavor of ubuntu.

Ubuntu may be losing its favor with the community but the important things for beginners is that it had a LOT of momentum for the past decade or so. That means lots of forum threads, lots of tutorials and lots of support from software for the platform. Which is important when your trying to pick up a whole new way of using your computer.

If your a windows power user already then I would say kubuntu. it uses kde and its got a windows-y vibe. stuff is mostly in the same places.

Once you’ve gotten your training wheels off then you can try anything, but start with a popular one
