They actually banned you after that? How is federation supposed to work if every user needs to follow every instance’s ToS, not just the one they are on?

Simple: you get banned from the specific instance where you’re violating the rule, like OP did.

It sucks, but this is literally how it’s supposed to work. They can participate everywhere except where they are violating the rules.

Realistically, all instances should probably be restricting access to 18+ so they don’t need to navigate the mess of US’s COPPA (I think that’s the name) laws regarding retention of minors’ data. I’m sure other jurisdictions have laws around that as wellm

And a free tip from someone a decade and a half past the 18 line: Don’t let people know how old you are online if you’re underaged. It’s just asking for trouble. We all lied about it when we were in your shoes. The ones who didn’t had to deal with creeps.

To be fair it may seem a bit silly, but it does bring to the forefront some potential legal issues with federation.

They may not be a lemmy.world user, but the posts and comments they make on the lemmy.world instance are obviously being federated on to lemmy.world servers. Also to be fair, it’s something the admins at .world did say they’re talking about.

I think it will probably unfortunately take a long time for sag here to get a real answer or update about this. I doubt this is the kind of thing the admins resolve in a day.

Hey, I’m the one that decided to ban this user. I understand the frustration, but it is very much in the TOS of lemmy.world and has been for a long time.

We are having an internal discussion to see if there’s room to lower the age to 16 and if we can make exceptions for federated users.

I hope you see that this really isn’t meant as a powertrip, and we are just trying to protect the Lemmy.world site.

Sorry if I do not respond to comments quickly, it’s late in my timezone.

As I said, I wouldn’t expect an update on this any time soon, despite how much is sucks.

The thing that sucks most is that this isn’t even the first time they’ve made such bad decisions yet they still harbor a majority of users on the platform. So their actions affect a disproportionate amount of users than if they were just another random instance.
