Felidae and Watership down (the old version). Let me explain:
TV shows like rescue rangers, gummy bears and similar definitely played a big role, but the two above mentioned movies played a huge role in how I first thought about the furry fandom.
Felidae and the old version of Watership down, for those who are not familiar with it, are not for kids. However, I ended up watching them as a kid on TV, staying up late. I don’t remember in which order I watched them, but I did so years apart and both haunted me in some horrifying but fascinating way.
Anyways, many years later when I stumbled upon my first ever adult furry content site I could not understand who would watch this. I liked it, but I thought I was odd and that there would be no way other people would like such a thing as well. And so I ended up convincing myself that the site only existed to give animators of adult animated movies like Felidae and Watership down some drawing practice, but that it was strictly a professional matter xD
I have yet to see either of these two you mention, although I know they exist.
Watership down is great!! I read the og book though the movie was hecking weird
Hard to say, but I think a big influence was “The Rescuers” movie that came out in 1977, I was pretty into it as a kid. Essentially I’ve been a furry for as long as I’ve been alive, I just didn’t have a word for it until I found the fandom.
It was definitely Redwall for me, with a sprinkling of Animorphs a bit later for extra TF flavor!
I read up to Salamandastron
As cliche as it may be, Renamon.
Good choice.
I had to think about it, but I think it was finding Brian Reynolds’ work online back in 1996.

Secret Squirrel, Redwall, 4chan threads I thought I should find gross but didn’t
I remember Secret Squirrel! (Love Tail~!)
Penny is so cute
Its in my pfp I mean come on
“Awakening” came years later, but I recently found out I was pre-programmed after finding childhood book.
This is the cover:
It had some questionable drawings in it, lol
Well that’s certainly suggestive. I imagine I would have enjoyed that book well into my teens.
Being a 90s kid I grew up with the Disney Renaissance and so The Lion King had a huge impact on me. I think the very first time I ever saw “love” on screen in a way that affected me was Nala’s bedroom eyes in “Can You Feel the Love Tonight,” lol. I was only in 1st grade or whatever but I knew that what I was looking at was special, somehow.
That, and reading the Redwall books, is where it all started.
For me, primarily a combination of Beauty and the Beast, Star Fox, and TLK, with the latter’s sequel pushing me over the edge (thanks to Kovu also awakening my queerness…)
Shit, like yeah, Robin Hood, Warner Bros. Cartoons, a little-known Canadian animated movie called Rock & Rule, and Fritz the Cat.
Oh! Secret of NIMH.
For me it was The Howling but loved robin hood and the hyena’s from Lion King. Before I was a furry though I was mostly a werewolf fan, unfortunately back in the late 90’s their fandom was super toxic but thankfully led me to furry.
I started out in the dragon fandom, then the TF fandom, then furry.

Secret of NIMH, Renamon, and Princess Sally from the Sonic SatAM cartoon were the big ones, but a lot of it was just suddenly noticing fox stuff everywhere and coming across furry art while feeding my weird new obsession.
Secret of NIMH easily did the most for making me ready to fall right into the furry fandom when I found it years later. TLK didn’t hurt, either, hehe, but yeah. Definitely NIMH.
Justin the rat gave me funny feelings as a kid.
Very much same; I count him as my first gay crush, haha, long before I was even really old enough to think in terms of sexuality or anything.
Star Fox. I had the hots for Falco as a child and proceeded to draw a bunch of new characters. Sonic Adventure 2 also started some of it too.
